My husband and I were raised in typical Chinese homes where affection is rare and often justified that their love is unspoken.
When I first arrived Canada, my lecturer gave me the first best bear hug that calmed my anxiety and fear! Then I received tons over there that build me up! I felt love very tangibly!
Soon, I learn that spoken words of love and affirmation have tremendous power and positive effect in our lives! So I actively asked my hubby all the time and he never fail to assure me, though it started awkwardly and reluctantly. Gradually, we will always spontaneously say 'I love u!" to each other in our family! And we started this tradition of actively asking for '抱抱!' when our battery is low! Even Gab will run to me for hugs! And I chuckled when I saw how 'charged!' he was and how he continued his play time with his tank full of love and assurance.
Do we say 'I love you' enough in our homes?? Even if we were not raised in an expressive environment, we can be the ones to start a new tradition. Let not our family upbringing or past stop us from actively expressing love and encouragement. We have the power to affect our family line for generations and leave a legacy of warmth, love and kindness!
Now my kids are natural with kiss n hugs. But if we were passive .... This 'coldness' goes on.... N they explained that their parents are like this too...
