It is unbelievable that kindergarden kids are attending tuition classes now. Academics is getting so competitive and stressful for well meaning parents. Sometimes I can't help pondering what are we actually trying to 'inculcate' to our kids.
Even Primary one kids feel the stress of being on par with their peers when they should just simply love school. School should be a fun place to learn and mingle with friends. Yet it becomes a 'playground' for them to compare grades!!
This cycle becomes vicious when those who can't afford tuition fees lag behind the supposed learning curve. I wish to take 2 steps behind too. Yet when I hear Ven expressed sadly about how her peers have already learnt this and that, I feel the subtle escalating stress too. With my first born, I never felt that way. School no longer is a place to learn, a place to show how 'good' I am. Somehow, this rat race is beginning to start as early as kindergarten... This is so sad.....
Since we are in this school system, we have to learn how to cope in a way that is psychologically healthy for our kids and ourselves. I must muster the courage to make wise choices based on my child's personality and learning needs. Parenthood seems daunting.....
